NTA Vigan visits Gulayan at Manukan site
The project monitoring team from the NTA Vigan Branch visited the vegetable and free-range chicken farm of tobacco grower Arlyn Vega, a beneficiary of the NTA Gulayan at Manukan sa Barangay Project, in Brgy. Nagsupotan, San Juan, Ilocos Sur on Thursday (June 4).
The 1,600-sq meter project site was a vegetable farm planted to eggplants, okra, pole sitaw, upland kangkong and ampalaya, and a portion for the 25 Sasso chicks in a net cage.
Vega, president of the San Juan Ilocos Sur Tobacco Growers MPCI, received the free vegetable seeds during the official launch of the project in San Juan on April 27, and chicks delivered by the Branch Office on May 12.
Aside from the seeds and chicks, the Branch provides project beneficiaries with fertilizers for the vegetables and initial chick starter and booster and plastic net cage for the chicken.
According to NTA Vigan Branch Manager Minerva P. Mizal, the Branch Office has established 68 of its target 150 "gulayan at manukan sites," in addition to the six pilot sites, in the first district of Ilocos Sur.
The NTA launched its "Gulayan at Manukan sa Barangay" Project on April 27 to help farming households produce their own food and raise additional income for their family during the COVID 19 pandemic, and in support of the "Plant, Plant, Plant" Program of he Department of Agriculture.
In all, the agency has already established 279 project sites out of its 488 target sites in tobacco-growing areas in Regions 1 and 2, and Abra. [Neyo E. Valdez / Photo credit: NTA Vigan]
