NTA holds workshop for Batek production technology

To consolidate the technology component of Batek production, the NTA Farm Technology and Services Department (FTSD), in cooperation with NTA La Union and NTA Pangasinan, conducted for the first time a consultative workshop with Batek growers, held at the NTA Pangasinan Office in Rosales town on July 2 and 3.

Participants were 11 farmer leaders representing about 2,500 Batek growers of La Union and Pangasinan, where the bulk of Batek tobacco is produced.

The two-day workshop, facilitated by FTSD, determined the entry point of research in the production process to enhance the quality of Batek tobacco.

According to FTSD Manager Imelda N. RiƱen, baseline data on the production practices of farmers were gathered in the workshop, which will be the basis for the unification of technology for Batek tobacco production in the country.

The output will be submitted to the Techno Updating Task Force for further discussion and approval for inclusion to the Tobacco Production Manual, with particular updates on fertilizers, topping and sucker management, harvesting, and curing practices.

FTSD is currently implementing the evaluation this year of different Batek tobacco varieties commercially grown in La Union, Pangasinan and in Mindanao for registration to the National Seed Industry Council.

The opening program was graced by Administrator Robert L. Seares, Director Wilson R. Victorio, and Branch Managers Dr. Giovanni B. Palabay (La Union) and Engr. Cesario G. Sambrana (Pangasinan).

According to Manager Palabay, a greater portion of Batek production goes to the Visayas and Mindanao, and a smaller slice goes to international market.

Farmers planting Batek claim that, the price offered for Batek leaves in the current trading season is relatively higher, at P180-P200 per kilo, than the other tobacco type, giving them a very high return on investment. [Text and photos: Felisa R. Aurellano; additional photos: Melanie Rapiz-Parel]
